You can get the Lenovo Y470 or Y570 for around $750 and it's a pretty damn good laptop for gaming. With a core i7 2720QM and a GT550m or GT555m it can play almost any current game on max at the native resolution.
It's optional because sometimes you might already have a copy of Windows lying around. In my case I have a Windows key provided by my employer that I can use with a number of PCs. Or you might get a student discount and get it for $30 and in some cases for free.
